Refractive Errors in a Rural Chinese Adult Population: The Handan Eye Study

The aim of the study was to provide a description for the prevalence of and risk factors for myopia and other refractive errors in a rural adult Chinese population.
The study used a clustered, random sampling method to randomly select 7,557 Chinese people 30 years old from Handan, China for investigation.
High school or higher education, diabetes, nuclear opacity and number of family members with myopia were risk factors in people 50 years of age.
The study shows that myopia affects more than one quarter of rural Chinese people who are 30 years old.
