  • The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of visual impairment on functional vision of children in a rural population of south India.

  • A systematic random sampling method was used to identify 1,194 children aged seven to 15 years.

  • Children with monocular visual impairment were likely to have functional visual deficits compared with normally sighted peers.

  • Children with binocular visual impairment had visual acuity worse than their normally sighted friends.
